PHILIPPE ROGIER 450th Anniversary Concert

Magnificat dir. Philip Cave and His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts

8.00pm, Saturday 19 February, 2011

Philippe Rogier (c.1561-1596) was Flemish by birth, but lived most of his life in Spain in the service of King Philip II. Most of Rogier's music has been lost, but it was much admired in his time: the famous Spanish poet Lopez described Rogier as the "honour, glory, light of Flanders". His writing is beautifully crafted, mellifluous and vibrant: yet at times it is also remarkably daring, with unexpected harmonic shifts and often plangent dissonances. This 450th anniversary concert presents two of his wonderful Mass settings, and several motets.
Magnificat is an outstanding vocal ensemble specializing in the restoration and performance of neglected choral masterpieces of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its director Philip Cave was a longstanding member of The Tallis Scholars. "A flawlessly blended ensemble that can meet any technical challenge." (American Record Guide)
